Print Nested Elements in M2Doc Report

Hello,

I have a project in which I have a list of elements where
some elements are nested as follows:

I am struggling to figure out a way to print out all my
components and subcomponents in an M2Doc report, in a structured way. For example, I would like to print the list above into an M2Doc report with the following structure:

- Component 1

- Subcomponent 1

- Subcomponent 2

- Subcomponent 3

- Subcomponent 4

- Component 2

- Subcomponent 5

I was wondering if you guys have come across this before
and have example to share.

Hi Lucas,

It depends a bit how you want to display the information, but the easiest approach is probably the one with loops within loops.

It's important that the for loops do not have a bullet formatting. If there is no sub-element (i.e. no contents), then Word would recognize a line with no text, but a bullet, and thus print it. If the for loop lines does not have any contents at all besides the field, then a completely empty line will be removed by Word - and that's what we want.

I wouldn't recommend any trials with recursion, as you always have to define already in Word how the style of the output should be for each level. Just have enough loops to cover all possible levels. ;-)

Hi Nils,

many thanks for this description. Do you have an idea how the for loops could be packed into one for loop which adds one sub component in each step? This would make the handling easier for multiple modules with many sublevels.

Hi Daniel,

There are possibilities to recurse within M2Doc (via a closure, see here ), but as I tried to explain before: You will then have all the levels maybe in one AQL collection, but they will all be displayed in Word as one single level in terms of formatting.

The format is defined for the M2Doc fields in Word (not by M2Doc itself), so anything you put out with such a field will have the same formatting - if not you start creating a list of M2Doc "if" clauses for each level, but isn't that in the end the same amount of work/fields, just even more complicated to understand?

Does that apply to your proposal, or did I misunderstand something? Would you like to go ahead with recursion via closures, or do you agree it's actually not helping?
