M2Doc Sample Reports #B: Basic Services

This is the second article of a series of articles about M2Doc as a new technology to generate Word reports out of medini models. You can find additional extensions (beta status) for 2022 R1 and 2022 R2 in our extension area on the online support page. An official release is planned for 2023 R1. All samples posted here are for 2022 R2. Main intention is to make you aware of the new technology but also to get any kind of feedback.

The second sample is about basic services that are offered by m2doc or by medini to access attributes or other data. Similar to medini scripting there is API to directly access attributes but also to call methods on objects or results of other expressions. The required m2doc expressions are again very simple. Access to an attribute for example may look like:

{ m:myRequirementsModel.name }

There is also a service to evaluate any arbitrary JS script expression! Check it out. See the first article of this series for instructions.

Hi Jan,

I am using something like:

myReqModel.eAllContents(safetygoals::SafetyRequirement)

The Requirments are listed all in one line directly after each other. Is there a possibility to format the output? E.g. after each element a CR? or list them in a table?

There are several possibilities, you can use for loops or templates (see M2Doc Sample Reports #C).

Maybe we should create another article that only deals with this kind of question.

now I am struggling with the next "level":

I want to have in the table all functions (column A) and in column C all linked Item definitions. If I try it like this, I receive an error message:

"Invalid block Template construct not allowed in this block. "

Hi Sven,

You are quick in picking up the template construct. They are not always necessary for a loop, but probably useful for more special cases (or repetitions, if all your tables are exactly the same, with the same table headers).

In your example I think the issue is that you cannot use templates within for loops. There is no "local" context of a template, but they are always global. So you would be defining it multiple times. You could try to define sortItems() next to renderAll(), although I haven't tested it.

Or you just put your list into the for loop directly, so instead of { m:for y | y } you write

{ m:for activity | myModel.eAllContents(sysml::SysMLActivity) }

In the meanwhile, I've added another Example #E about tables in this thread. I hope that helps you!

I agree with Nils, Templates are maybe overkill in your case Sven, try to make it simpler as in Nils example, just a simple for loop should be sufficient.
