During the medini user conference it was demonstrated that it was possible to generate a report from a checklist.

I find that very interesting especially for pictures, introduction and conclusions as an example...

Could medini provide a small example especially for pictures to be inserted in birt report ?

Hi Florent,

the presented solution was (is) quite customer specific and we need to sort things out a bit before we can release stuff to the community. That can be s step-wise process, starting with the most generic parts. The part that renders selected documents and diagrams is very generic and just based on Java Script. If you feed the Java Script functions with own objects (so handle the selection of diagrams and files yourself, I am confident that we can share some library here in the forum.

I see there is an option for customized reports within medini, and it seems that *.js java script file and a *.rptlibrary file (I am not sure what is this) need to be included for customized reports, also on the last conference I saw that some companies are working on this, so I am wondering if we can create our own java scripts to generate customized reports or if this is an ANSYS task we need to request? seems more like an ANSYS task because I am not sure what does *.rptlibrary file is right?, however if there is a way we can do our own java scripts to customize our reports it could be great!

cool to have you here in the forum. Well, it would need some more articles to explain this complex world and all possibilities, but I try to do it in a few sentences. First of all, yes, you can create your own customized reports (while there is still the option that ANSYS does the work for you). Anyway, this is an expert forum, so it is meant to enable you all to do this on your side.

The BIRT environment allows you to model many reusable parts in libraries, so a kind of reuse concept. That's what these .rptlibrary files are all about. You for example may share a library where all data set are defined and maybe another one where you have basic report elements defined. In the user conference it was demonstrated and they use a rather large library of common building blocks.

Now BIRT is also scriptable similar to medini itself, that'w why there are many many places in BIRT where you can extend your report with scripts. That's the reason for these typical .js files. For the presented case mentioned by Florent, we have developed a very powerful JS library that offers many many functions that can be used by report designers to make their reports flexible, for example to hide or show whole chapters based on some checklists.

I hope to post libraries as well as scripts here in this forum quite soon.

I have been experimenting with BIRT and have been reading through some of the documentation. It seems not all that hard to create a strictly data driven report which formats a data set in a nice printable way. However with Medini and our safety case, I would like to generate ready to use documents from Medini. This means, a cover page, table of contents page, document history page, a page or pages with some introduction text and then finally, the actual formatted data set (like an overview of requirement for example).

All the examples I found focus only on the formatted data set with some additional formatting for header/footer or logo's. Examples that generate complete documents with cover page, TOC, etc. are not available or at least, I was not able to find them.

My question is: do you know if it is possible to generate ready to use documents with BIRT? If so, could you point me to some examples that use this? How do others use Medini and BIRT to generate their final documentation for the safety case of their project?

Well, there is no easy answer for your question though. On one hand we have our default reports which you probably know. They are not designed to be out of the box solutions, they simply cannot because everyone customizes and uses medini in its own way. However, you can use them as a starting point. I think the "Safety Concept" report has a cover page, TOC and other stuff.

Document history is already something more difficult since medini does not provide any specific mans to "model a document history". Most users create a checklist table and use that as an input for the history but there is no template prepared to be used out of the box. A better solution might be a table that is derived from the revision control system used but that requires (1) that it IS actually used and (2) some data source that is filled with the RCS history.

Now the last thing: within this thread we discussed the possibility to offer a more generic BIRT template which was presented by VW at our user conference. Idea is to make reports more generic and drive the input from within medini. We spend quite some effort now to make this available and I'm confident to have it soon.
