automated search and replace

Dear everyone,

we have a collection of safety mechanisms. (From a generic view, it could be something else, though)

We have to adapt an attribute (e.g. "id" of element "SafetyMechanism") for a great many safety mechanisms. A search and replace script using regular expressions for both search and replace expression would be ideal and most flexible.

Could somebody (Jan :-) ) please help us with getting this drafted?

Hi Peter,

I was able to dig the old script out. The script was meant to fix typos in a large set of objects and attributes so it basically can replace a string with typo with the correct one. The trick in this script is that it uses a generic array of features from the meatmodel to query objects and search attributes.

Maybe a start? Please check and play a bit with that.

The uses function java.lang.String.replaceAll is working with regex as first argument already I think.

I am sure, we have some search & replace script available from the past. It had some slightly different use case and was replacing just terms by other terms but that could be a start. I'll try to dig it out ...

Hi Jan,

finally I was able to test the script. It works in principle and I wanted to extend it so the user can interactively can make use of it without the need for editing the code:

Unfortunately it seems to be not possible to use prompt to open a modal dialogue?! (ref. https://www.w3schools.com/jsref/met_win_prompt.asp)

Do you have a tip how this could be achieved?

Nice, medini has this functionality available from "ui.js". This is my modified solution that seems to work well (from a brief test). Note the first line, "$EXPERIMENTAL$" is necessary to prevent the error

Great, Peter, nice improvement and you found the function faster than I could answer :-)

Note that many scripts published in the net for Java Script will not work without adaptation in medini,

simply because most script developers assume that they script inside a browser, and browsers

usually have many objects they offer (like window, document etc.).

The "prompt" method is actually part of the Window class.

Anyway, I think "prompt" is definitely something we can add as well, we already did that for "alert" which is a method of Window as well.

that is exactly what I though, after I wondered why "alert" works, but "prompt" not. In the meanwhile I extended the script a little bit further so that it only applies the search/replace operation below the selected entry of the model. If wished for, I can upload it.

is there a possibility to not limit the attributes, where the script should search? (e.g. in name, decription, partnumber,...)

Or is the only option to mention it separately like in the first script?

Hi Sven, sorry for the late reply. I am sure the script could be made fully reflective, close to the obfuscation script which runs over all objects and all attributes. Its a rather long running operation so maybe at least the types are limited to a set?

The script would also have to make a decision whether a certain attribute is changeable, this is sometimes tricky to decide, the obfuscation script works with black listed attributes to avoid that certain data are changed.

So all in all, yes, it should be possible but comes with a cost.

Ah, just an idea, another way would be to generate the static list of attributes to check by a script. Kind of intermediate solution.
