Dear Jan, dear all

I am currently migrating to 20R2. I have to instal a specific plugin in a certain directory..plus since 20R1 like for the BIRT I need to modify the config.ini file..and more over when migrating I just discover that all internal variable that we can use in script, ocl, birt reports, profiling were modifiy during migration..user_ added..and to finish the metamodel has evolved so some profiling have to be reworked.

I was wondering it some update for 20R2 or else could be managed using script because it is becoming tough for my users not expert in IT to install /configure the tool and import the new projects properties..

Hi Florent,

I have to admit that upgrading to 2020 R2 (or even 2020 R1) imposes some painful tasks. In addition the deployment of additional plugins got more difficult with each eclipse update, we struggle as well. A few comments:

Scripts have a backward compatibility mode for the new "user_" prefix, so you should be able to use the old scripts as is without adaptation to "user_"
That is true for Java Script but also for OCL
BIRT on the other hand doe snot support this compatibility, so reports need to be patched
The idea to use a script sounds promising, the feasibility depends a bit on which tasks you really want to automated, could you list them here?

Thanks for the clarification.

I think that I see 2 scripts categories.

Category 1 : I would like to be able to manipulate some files. First use case like I need to install a plugin then I would like that it is transparent for the user. It can just execting the script.Maybe with ui he/she can select the jar file and then either we replace automatically the config ini file by the one provided by medini admin or we are able to modifiy the config.ini file by the script itself. Second use case like te scripts can evolved due to new lib that you provide or scripts modified due to improvement or simply ne script available. So I could imagine that user can select a medini project file containing the latest scripts under svn and then the old js files would be replaced by the new one..or simply new js would be added if not existing.We could also imagine to extend that to profiling properties or dynamic constraints maintenance. like a patch that user can apply..not too tricky for him/her.

Category 2 : when updated my template to 20R2 I relize yes that all new medini varible were updated using the using_ preffix. even if it would work for long term I would prefer to have all profiling, dynamic constraints, scripts, biirt templates ? updated properly using a script. This script could first look at these elements that are using the GetProfileProperty('variable') and modity it by GetProfileProperty('user_variable') ?

Hoping that my view is more clear. As solution I would expect category 2 in priority to modify my templates.

Got it. The script for second category, is it just executed by you as script maintainer or shall this be executed by anyone?

Background of my question is that there are surely techniques out the better than Java Script to do text replacement so I wonder whether that's a pure admin /script / birt developer task you wan to support with that or not.

For category 2 we still have two scenarii. One as admin I want to modify/add all my scripts / ocl..so I would execute the script to spread the modif.

The second scenario is when I do some correction on script/ocl/profiling and I want that user just ran a script like a patch to deploy the modification..

That is an idea but t is maybe not realistic...if it takes too long time to enable such script no interest. we would carry one by hand. Also for scripting I think that we could also have a scripting library like when we import reliability database..The scripting library could be located on svn or else. when you update some scripts from lib or we update/add script we should just update the script lib imported and it should be smooth for user. so I would prefer such mechanism that scripts..

I agree that compare/merge or importing properties in one project can solve but it request more advanced users. and sometime I do not want to show them this because I do not want that they start to activate/deactivate things..Like dynamic constraints..today anyone can disable a rule if you know where it is..

BIRT can be a different subject..we do not have too much birt templates..

OK, got it. I can imagine support for both but need to start small, so first a script that connects to a Subversion, downloads the stuff and copies it into any number (or all) selected projects.

I can imagine that. Would that be beneficial?

Hi Florent,

I was sure, I posted something on Friday but now I cannot find it, very strange.

Anyway, attached you will find two scripts:

UpdateScripts.js has to be deployed to any user and project normally. Once executed, it is downloading the other script (UpdateMe.js) from a server,

in my case a subversion location. After download, it executes (loads) the script.

UpdateMe.js is then downloading a complete folder from the server and copying the content into the scripts forlder of the project.

It does not delete anything yet, but overwrites without asking. The scripts has to be deployed to a server (e.g. SVN) before of course.

I think this solution is neat because you just deploy an initial small script and have full control over the update script itself

because its also just downloaded.

We are looking for a way to update the scripts, profiling, table layout, report design from one project to another without going into Compare and Merge, which requires users to be quite familiar with the tool.

The script you shared here sounds like what we are looking for, could you share the it with me please?

We don't currently run SVN yet, but if that's the convenient way to do so we can explore.

Hi Maisy,

sure I can do. Note that the original idea of Florent was to to download a script and *execute* that script, so a kind of "<?WORD FLAGGED?>" and simple update script that downloads and execute up-to-date update scripts.

From you post I get that you are looking for something simpler, so "just" downloading any content. You could do that with any Java IO or HTTP library out there but a very simple 4 liner you can find attached.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I'm looking for transferring content from one project to another e.g. transferring all the attacks, description for the attacks, requirements, and their traces...etc.
Project A: old template with filled content

Project B: new, empty template and needs to be filled with content from Template A.

Is there any helper to help with transferring the content? Alternatively, what file path within the directory of a project A shall we look into to get all the contents?

Hi Maisy,

this would actually an application case for the medini compare&merge feature. You create your new empty project ProjectB and afterwards trigger the compare with the old project ProjectA (with ProjectB as target and ProjectA a source). In the differences browser you can selet all content which shall be transferred into ProjectB.

Thanks for the reply. There are quite a few colleagues who are new to Medini who will have to use the transfer and merge feature and usually there are quite a lot of fields to transfer...to minimise possibility of error we thought it might be easier to have a script that updates for the users. Are there functions that could help with this process?
