Accessing "self"

Hi,

This may be quite a basic question but I've been struggling! Hope to get some insight.

In derived property, we often put "self" as the argument into the script. e.g. if we have a script that has a function which calculates background colour, we can do BckGrdColors(self).

What if I'd like another script to change the value of background colour of the same property? How would we access the object "self"?

Let's say the property that I'd like background colour set is called "description". I've tried description = "[@#00FF00]" + description, but it doesn't seem to work. This shows that the property "description" isn't "self".

Hi Maisy,

with derived properties you  always define a new (user defined) property and set a value for that one. self would in this case point to the obeject to which the property is added. You can not change the value of an existing build-in property - like in your case description is a build-in property of a Threat object.

There would be two options for you:

* You just define an additional property (e.g. user_changed) and set the value/color for that one like self.user_changed = "[@#00FF00]" + self.description
* You change the property description by a script which you call explicitly - in that case you would have some statements like threat_object.description = "[@#00FF00]" + threat_object.description ... where threat_object is a pointer to the threat whose description should be colored

My questions now is: How do we get access to the pointer of a particular object (if it's not the current object)? In a table, how would we change the background colour of a property without using "self"?

Example:

I'd like to change the background colour of the property description of an attack if the description has been updated. In my script to run the update, I'd like to access the description object pointer. How would I get access to the pointer?

Hi Maisy,

I am not sure I understand. "self" is more or less the pointer to the current object, nothing more, nothing less. You may use it to access properties of the object, you can't *change* the object though, derived properties are always read-only.

If I missed the point, please elaborate a bit more.
