BOM import based on levels

Question

I have a BOM having different levels included. There is a TopLevel Block with 1, on the second level there is sub-block level 2, this block has children as well, which are on level 3 etc.

The hirarchy numbers are stored in a separate column.

The question is how to navigate from a sibling to the parent? Is there any specific method?

Basically I want to find the first 3, then move to the container 2 but I'm not sure how to find the parent/predcessor in the model browser.

Hi Jan,

well - not sure whether that was the intended feature. Does not really make sense to have a capacitor inside a capacitor ....or other strange things which are created by that script. Let Krassi provide some more information about the structure of the BOM.

I assume the problem is that the hierarchy is given as numbers, not paths. So an element with level 3 means, to move it into the scope of the element before which should have either 3 as well or 2. I gave it a thought and I think it can be solved like this:

* iterate from highest level to 1 (without 1)
* find all elements with that level and move them always to the sibling *before* the element

The algorithm assumes that there is never a break in the ladder, so never 3 follows 1. I wrote an initial simple script that implements the algorithm and attached it. Please check and give feedback.

Hi Krasimira,

the latest version (2020R1) of the "Restructure HW Model" script in Best Practices does consider multi-level BOM and builds an appropriate HW model out of an imported Excel-BOM. It does however expect the appropriate path-names for the HW parts in the excel like this

When running the script choose the option "Components" and not "Folders" to organize the model. The separator ("/") can easily adjusted in the script ...
