Scripting against BigDecimal

You may or may not have stumbled over attributes in the Metamodel that are typed with BigDecimal. Like most failure rate values:

If you retrieve values from these attributes, you will receive instances of Java BigDecimal objects. The main intention of this article is to make you aware and to provide at least the API of these classes. I will add more findings and obstacles over time.

First thing you recognize is that this is not a Java Script number:

var part = ...
var value = part.FailureRate;
// this will show "object"
alert(typeof value);

// this will show "number"
value = 2.0 * value;
alert(typeof value);

Its recommended to use the BigDecimal API instead of switching to the Java Script floating values:

// DONT
var result = 10.0 * value;

// DO
var result = value.multiply(BigDecimal.TEN);

wouldn't

myJSDouble = 1000.0;
var myBigDecimal = BigDecimal(myJSDouble);

// OR
var myBigDecimal = myJSDouble.toBigDecimal();
var myOtherBigDecimal = "1000".toBigDecimal(); // cast from string

be more direct? This way, you would apply it like an explicit cast from your variable myJSDouble, which holds a floating point value.

Could alternatively/also the double class be overloaded to support a "toBigDecimal()" method. This could of course also be added to string, integer and other applicable classes.

In other words: "parseBigDecimal()" is also fine, but please make it handle not only strings as input argument.

that's a good idea and feasible. I once did that to extend the string type.

You may use this as an example:

/**
 * Some String extension: Formats the string with two parameters.
 * @memberOf String
 * @param {Object} argument1
 * @param {Object} argument2
 * @returns {String}
 * @see java.lang.MessageFormat
 */ 
String.prototype.format2 = function(argument1, argument2) {
 // just delegate the call to Java 
 return java.text.MessageFormat.format(this, argument1, argument2);
};

Can be used like:

var suffix = "Overall {0} events in {1} cut-sets were analyzed".format2(numEventsAnalyzed, numCutSetsAnalyzed);

You can extend that to any other method you like.

Well, its actually an advice from the Java world, not really from Java Script. JS has introduced BigInt

but not really BigDecimal. It seems that they rely on Double or use other JS libraries.
