Importing Failure Modes to HW libarary

Hi,

While creating a new HW library, there's an option to import from CSV\Excel a list of components\BOM.

The attributes to be imported are :

1. Part number

2. Name

3. Failure Rate

4. Percentage of Parent (0..1)

5. Percentage of Parent (0...100%)

6. Description

The issue is that medini don't provide a way for importing FMs..so I the only way is to add manually the FMs for each component.

I have a lookup table (CSV) file which identify the Failure Modes of each type of component in my BOM therefore - I would like to create a script that imports a list for FM with distribution for each of the components...

How can I make a script to import those FMs? any clues will be helpful...

Attaching an example for part of my Lookup Table.

Yes, strange observation, I have no clue what the cause of that might be, except ... maybe a part number occurs twice in the same project?

Anyway, I have improved the script in multiple ways and attached a new version, new things:

* the script now handles blocks, not parts

* the script must be executed on a scope, a library or package and is solely searching inside only

* the script checks for duplicates and shows some alert

* some more paranoia code and logging

at first glance that should be feasible with a script. I assume you *have* already a model with types and want to add failure modes? Or is this an import that imports both, components + failure modes?

A script can do stuff, but working around our type library / BOM import sync is tricky.

It is ok to go with existing library, which means that first I do the import for the BOM\List of components to the new HW library

Then we'll run the script on top of the HW library which will add the data (FM and disctribution") to every component according to it's part number?

does it makes sense?

Indeed it does, that's even the better approach and we may have something in our script collection that we can reuse. So the script can run over the excel, search for the component and add FM and distribution per excel row.

Alon, I have attached a sample project with

1. your sample excel file inside

2. a library with the components imported from that excel file (as parts!)

3. a script that imports all failure modes and distribution, update should work too

Note: the library contains parts, not blocks so in case you have blocks, please change the script (there i a TOD you will find).

Note further: the script currently is looking in the complete model for a block/part with specific part number. If you want to apply it on selection, you have to script that.

Feel free to enhance the script and post your findings here.

That work in your project, but in mine, there are some strange issues... It finds only part of the component when I run on the sample lut file, but on my full LUT I receive :

Alon, before you continue debugging, lets clarify a few things. What's in your "full LUT"?

Types or instance (so blocks or parts) or is it an imported BOM based on a type library?

The script is not ready for all kinds, as mentioned in my original email.

Secondly, the error you have listed is caused by "non existing rows". Are you using another Excel file?

Maybe the script is lacking some more failure handling but its simple to add that.

Let me know how to proceed

Hi Jan,

OK I tried the following :

- I created an 2 Element Libraries.

- 1st is BOM based (Import elements from BOM)

- 2nd is type based (import type definitions)

I executed the script on 1st with "Metamodel.sysml.SysMLPart" on LUEXMEDINI. everything is fine and all FMs were added succesfully.

I executed the script on 2nd with "Metamodel.sysml.SysMLBlock" on LUEXMEDINI. it runs but FMs appeared only on one of the components from the list. it is strange.

I think that I would like to work with a "type" kind of HW library because I want to reuse the parts as a types in my HW model to derive FMEDA.

by the way LUT - Look-Up-Table which. I meant just to a csv with the same structure of the example table LUTEXMEDINI but just with all FMs of all components...I will take that later...

Hi Jan,

First, I would like to thank you for this solution, it works great!

The second thank will be for the "Restructure HW Model" script that helped me to organize my BOM based on hierarchy.

So the complete solution is :

1. Creating an HW library by types by importing the list of components.

Then I execute your script to import and fill FMs to every component

2. Import the HW library to the project as an external library.

3. Import the BOM "single lined" with "circuit_block" which specify the hierarchy from the schematics.

4. run your "Restructure HW Model" from the Best Practice example.

now what's left is to derive the FMEDA and start the analysis

I hope that more users will use that approach...

Sorry but it seems that there's a conflict there with the Failure Distribution

in my DB the scale for FM distribution was 0...1 and I just figure out from my FMEDA that the failure distribution attribute should be 0...100(%)

because I already built my HW lib, I would like to create a script that will refactor all FM distributions by 100.

How can I create a for\while loop that will run on all Elements and FMs in the library and update the distribution? should I use the Finder?

Yes, the approach is correct. You may also do this:

Hello,

I want to import failure modes and failure rates from an "*.xlsm" file, but it is not working even if the library "Excel.js" includes this line :

file = openFile([ "*.xlsx", *.xlsm" ]); which means for me the possibility to choose one of the two extensions.

This is the error message that i get :

Thanks Laila for the idea to improve the extension pattern to include xlsm, I will consider that in the next update of the excel library.

The error you face is happening in line 45 or 64 of the script.

In both cases, the script assumes that the cell contains what Excel calls a "shared string", so actually some string you have entered in Excel. However, it might be empty or a number which causes exactly the error you face. You have to switch to

var fmName = cell.getInterpretedValue();

However, in that case the return value might be undefined or a number so you have to check.
