Plans for Medini to support other OS?

Hi channel, A few colleagues who use Medini are moving to using the M1 Mac for work. However, they have not been able to find any legal and not too expensive ways to run Windows on M1 Macs: - Virtualbox does not have a M1 port - Windows license for AArch64 windows only come with AArch64 based windows machine - QEMU is apparently very slow This means that they won't be able to use Medini. We are wondering whether there are any plans to develop Medini that is compatible with other OS? Kind regards, Maisy

Hi Maisy, there is currently no support for Mac OS and no mature plan to change that, I'm sorry. We had started to port parts of it to Linux last year but recognized that many tool integrations are also require windows. And Linux is not Mac + that new M1 ARM based Mac add's another difficulty atop of that, right? So our plan for the future is to run in browser completely platform independent. This is a longer migration path and may not help today, but we think its the future proof way. Regards Jan

Could I also know the rough timeline for the linux version please (as installing a Linux VM on M1 is relatively easy)? Thanks.

Maisy, that migration is on ongoin process, starting with a tech demonstrator this summer. That one will be still using the rich client but sharing data on a server. Will take us fore sure 2-3 more releases after that to go full web, so 2 year from now on is a rough assumption. The linux version was never finished and plans were stopped, maybe that was a misunderstanding. Regards Jan

Hi, I've recently done a small test on my private M1 MacBook Air and with a VM for ARM Windows I could install and use medini (not tested much) without problems. The ARM->x64 emulation is done by Windows. Fast enough for normal work, although I wouldn't do extensive FTA computation on it. And it's one of my few use cases on M1, which empties the battery in few hours. My setup: macOS Ventura 13.1, UTM 4.1.5 as Virtualizer, Win11 ARM in a QEMU 7.2 ARM Virtual Machine But note that medini is not developed for that environment, not tested at all. You could (with Enterprise license) do your own medini qualification kit test runs, but it's all at your own risk. Regards, Nils
